Hospital Broadcasting Week 2005

Radio Warneford, the hospital broadcasting service based at Warwick Hospital, will be taking part in Hospital Broadcasting Week, a national event organised by the Hospital Broadcasting Association to highlight the work of the largest volunteer sector in the UK. This year, Hospital Broadcasting Week runs from Saturday 2nd until Sunday 10th April.

Throughout the week, the station will be highlighting its services and the work of its volunteer members during broadcasts to patients and staff at Warwick Hospital. Radio Warneford will also be broadcasting a special programme called 'Mr Peggotty's Diary' which recounts the thirty-one year history of the station.

On Friday 8th April, Radio Warneford will be hosting an Open Evening at it's studio complex between 7.30pm and 9.00pm. As well as inviting all of the local organisations who have supported the station and its activities, Radio Warneford has opened up the event to anyone with an interest in joining hospital radio. There will be a chance to chat to some of our volunteer members to find out what's involved in our work and to have a look around the studios. Anyone wanting further information can email us at openhouse@radiowarneford.com.

Radio Warneford began broadcasting in December 1973, initially for six weeks, to provide entertainment for patients at the Warneford Hospital in Leamington Spa over the Christmas period. Over the years, the station expanded from its broom cupboard home into a converted storage hut on the Warneford Hospital site before moving to Warwick Hospital in the mid-1990s. The station now has one of the most modern hospital radio studio complexes in the UK.

The excellence of the Radio Warneford's service has been recognised at a national level. The station was runner-up in the finals of the National Hospital Radio Awards in 1996 and took the Bronze Award in 2001 and 2002.

Radio Warneford currently broadcasts for 29 hours a week and has more than 60 volunteer members.

Hospital Broadcasting Week is an annual event, organised by the Hospital Broadcasting Association, an umbrella organisation representing almost 300 hospital radio stations in the UK and a number of others around the world.
